How to change a wheel: Detailed instruction manual

Tires and Wheels

The ability to change wheels will never be superfluous. Especially as the process itself takes 10-15 minutes, and everything you need is usually in the trunk of any car.

How do you know the wheel’s been punctured

A punctured wheel is usually indicated by extraneous noise from outside, as well as speed loss and impaired handling. If a car is pulled aside and you have to make an effort to keep it on the road, it is likely that a puncture is made on one of the front wheels. If the rear of the car starts to move, then the problem is there.

When that happens, you’ll know exactly what it is. Don’t panic under any circumstances. Align the car and, gradually reducing the speed, pull over to the curb.

How to change a wheel

1. Park at the side of the road.

According to obd, you can’t keep driving with a punctured tire, but it’s no use stopping in the middle of the road. So don’t be afraid to drive a couple of tens of meters and choose a flat dry spot on the side of the road.

It is best to get away from moving vehicles so as not to provoke an accident and not to risk your life.]

Drivers of machines with manual gearboxes should always engage first gear, and owners of automatics should move the lever to the parking position (P).

And in any case, you need to put the car on the handle.

2. Install the emergency stop sign and prepare the tools.

When parking the car in a safe place, do not forget to activate the alarm and set the emergency stop sign, which is in the boot. In populated areas, it is placed 20 meters behind the car, and on the highway – 40 meters.

In the trunk, find a spare and a bottle key jack. Usually, the manufacturer has it all in a special niche under the polka, which can be accessed by lifting the bottom panel.

It’s good if you have a pump and pressure gauge to check the pressure as well as chocks. And, of course, gloves wouldn’t hurt, because you’d still have to get your hands a little dirty.

3. Remove the wheel.

White Wheels

Deliver all tools and spare parts, place them next to the punctured wheel and ask all passengers to leave the car. Even if there is heavy frost or heavy rain outside, safety first.

In spite of the handbrake and the gear engaged, the wheels must be additionally secured with stanchions before the jack is installed. Behind them, however, any stones or pieces of brick will come down.

If the rear wheel needs to be replaced, the stops are on both sides of the front wheels, and vice versa.

Now we can begin to remove the wheel. First, release the disc from the plastic cap and loosen the bolts with the cylinder wrench. It will take a lot of force to move them, which can be provided by the weight of your body just by pressing the wrench with your foot. There is no need to completely unscrew the bolts: just unscrew them by one turn.

After that, you need to lift the car with a jack. You can never install it anywhere. Especially for these purposes, there are small reinforced places on the bottom, which are usually behind the front wheel or just before the rear wheel. The manufacturer marks them with triangles or notches at the bottom of the sills. If the weld is covered with plastic pads, they will be interrupted at the jack mounting points.

Move the jack under the bottom and start turning the handle clockwise. Make sure that the jack rises evenly and does not tilt.

If the lower paw of the jack goes into the ground under the weight of the car, you need to put under it something like a piece of board or a brick.

It’s not worth raising the wheel too much. It’s enough to stop at 5 cm from the ground. After that, you can completely unscrew the bolts and remove the punctured wheel from the hub. It is better to push it under the car like insurance, and put the bolts somewhere on a rag, so as not to get lost.

4. Install and check the spare part.

All that’s left is to put a spare instead of a punctured wheel. To do this, align the holes on the disc with the holes in the hub, put the wheel on and press in the bolts, fully tightening them by hand.

The nuts that secure the wheels to the hub are important for the semicircular side of the disc, not the outside.

Remove the punctured wheel from under the car, lower the jack and finally tighten the bolts. You have to do it right. On wheels with four or six holes, the opposite bolts will be tightened in pairs. If there are five holes, you have to pull it in the order that you draw a five-pointed star.

It remains to assemble the tool, remove the jack and the stops, and check the pressure in the installed wheel and, if necessary, inflate it. If the pump is not at hand, you can ask drivers passing by for help.

If you use a small stock, the so-called dokatka, be careful: it can usually be driven at a speed of no more than 10 m/h and a maximum distance of 100 miles.

And, of course, try to fix a punctured wheel in a specialized tire fitting as soon as possible, so as not to test your luck and not to drive without a spare.

How to choose a vehicle cover?

How to choose a vehicle cover?

Everyone knows that leaving the car in the open sun, especially in the summer heat, is not good for it. And the thing is not even that it is very hot and inside the cabin, it becomes hot as hades. The front torpedo burns out, the upholstery material gets damaged. However, putting a car under the trees is also fraught with problems in the form of dripping tree juice that corrodes the varnish. To prevent such problems, it is worth getting durable car covers or tarps.

What is a tarp or a vehicle cover?

A practical tarp a car is a large piece of fabric that completely covers the car from above and protects it from sunlight, dirt, water and other things. It is a very useful car accessory when traveling, when you have to leave the car in the sun, for example on the beach, in the country or even just in the parking lot.
Car tarps differ among themselves in several ways:

  • dimensions;
  • variety of material;
  • the presence of cords, elastic bands along the edge, and so on.

We’ll clarify right away: we are talking about covers for cars and small trucks no larger than the usual GAZelle. For buses and large trucks, such a cover is not used – it is extremely inconvenient to put on, and it is difficult to fold it. The usual tarp is lightweight, folds up to the dimensions of a small bag and does not take up much space either in the trunk, in the garage or on the balcony, where it is usually stored.

How to choose a tarp for a car?

It is very rare to find a fancy tarp, except for cars from the premium class and above. Such products are usually of good quality, exactly match the dimensions of the machine and serve for a long time. But keep in mind that their price is high, at least twice as much as the regular ones. The protective properties remain the same.

To protect the car from the sun and foreign substances, a regular car cover will be more than enough. They are available in three sizes – large, medium and small, which allows them to be selected depending on the external dimensions of the car. For example, for small cars with dimensions comparable to Nissan Micra, as well as many hatchbacks, the smallest cover will work. Medium is the most common size for passenger cars and is suitable for most of them. The big one is designed for SUVs and long station wagons. The dimensions of your particular car model are easy to find on the Internet if you do not have its passport at hand when buying a cover. It is not worth taking a tarp bigger than your car – it does not shrink over time, and the cover that is hanging down quickly gets dirty in the rain, and you will have to wash it so as not to get the car dirty with it.

Protective car cover: materials

The most important characteristic of a tarp is the material from which it is made. It directly depends on how long and well it will last you. Here are some of the most common materials.

Polyester. The most budget option, very thin, light and affordable. The disadvantage of this option is that it does not have a lining, it quickly gets wet and sticks strongly to the car, and at freezing temperatures, it freezes to the roof, and it is impossible to remove it without ripping it. Also, it is easily destroyed by ultraviolet radiation, and with constant use, such a tarp will last for a couple of years, no more than that.

Polyurethane, aka PEVA. This material is more durable and dense. It retains water well, gets wet just a little, allows air to pass through, and a cotton lining allows it not to stick to the surface of the car and it is easy to remove and put it on even in the rain. It can withstand scratches from animal claws – traces will remain, but the car itself will be unharmed. The disadvantages are that is bigger, dries longer and is more expensive. But it has a great price and quality.

Tarpaulin. Very rarely used for passenger cars due to the high cost and heaviness. But it is a great option for flatbed trucks or trailers – resistant to wear, stretches onto the car frame and forms a full-fledged roomy body. It is tightened with lace, for which there should be rings or other loops sewn on it. We do not recommend it for a passenger car though.

To make it convenient to use a vehicle cover, take the one that has a zipper to open the front door without removing the entire cover, and the one that has pockets for mirrors. This is optional but so convenient. The important points are also double seams and elastic at the bottom.

In conclusion, the purchase of a protective vehicle cover is, for the most part, a long-term investment, and you will appreciate that the interior will remain cool on your first vacation in the heat, and there will be no signs of corrosion from the tree juice after parking under the trees. You will not regret such a purchase!

How To Wash A Car On Your Own?

HOW TO WASH A CAR ON YOUR OWN?

In this article, we will tell you how to wash a car yourself using special car washes or to even wash it without water.

HOW TO WASH WITHOUT WATER?

The main problem when washing a car is choosing a place. To wash the car thoroughly, you need water, car shampoo and rags. Car shampoo and rags can be found, but where to get water for washing a car in the city?

You can get a fine for washing a car in the river or lake. Washing from a bucket is also dangerous, you can damage the paintwork because particles of sand will remain on the sponge. Therefore, for a high-quality washing, a high-pressure apparatus, such as Karcher, is required, which will wash off the main dirt.

With high prices, not every person will be able to constantly use a car wash. There is a way out and it has long been implemented in many countries. And it is to wash the car yourself.

There is a whole network of independent car washes. You just have to pay a few dollars and you will be provided with all the equipment for washing. Many people use this service, since it is cheaper than a regular car wash, and no one will wash your car better than you.

After applying foam to the car, don’t wait for too long, start washing immediately. The composition for contactless washing is made of surfactants and concentrated alkaline solution. The recipe for it is the same as for a professional paint remover. If you keep such a “shampoo” on the car for longer than two to three minutes, then the risk is huge.

WHAT IS A DRY WASH?

Dry-washing without water has become popular, it is when a car can be washed near large shopping centers, for example, when you go shopping. Or you can call a brigade of washers at any specified location. This is convenient, but for many, it can be expensive.

In this case, there are chemicals for washing a car without water, if you want to wash the car yourself. They can be bought at an auto store or ordered online. They represent spraying agents that effectively remove dirt from the machine without the aid of water. You only need these cleaning products and napkins (rags) to wipe the car body.

You can apply it in the yard and in any convenient place. Dry-washing with these products (shampoo-polish) is not expensive at all. Just buy all the needed tools once and wash the car without water. Such washing also polishes the car really well.

But will it scratch the car? No. The product is sprayed onto the body, then it absorbs all the dirt and after that, it is removed with light movements without the aid of force, with simple movements. It has been tested, no scratches at all.

Wax is added to the composition of auto chemicals for dry washing. That is, you take it, wipe the car with it and that’s it. No need to wash it before or after. Can it be used when the car is slightly covered with dust? Manufacturers claim that there will be no scratches. But what are the guarantees? Even if there are scratches, the wax that is part of the washing spray will then polish them.
